This week, I decided to branch off a little for my Wed-Spiration post. While I’ve been doing them about wedding themes, I saw a few clips online from the movie Bridesmaids and was inspired to write a post about bridesmaids dresses. (Every bridal party should make it a tradition to watch this movie. It’s way too funny to miss out on!)

For bridesmaids dresses, there are so many options out there now that it’s easy to make both you and your maids happy with the dresses.

Let’s look at four trends for Bridesmaids Dresses.

TOTALLY MATCHING
The most commonly chosen path is to have all of the bridesmaids matching, both in colour and style. This option has been the most popular because it’s A) the easiest, and B) allows for a consistent look amongst the girls. My girlfriend Michelle is getting married next summer and has chosen a very cute dress for all of us to wear, which I’m very excited to wear! The main thing to remember when opting for this trend is to take into consideration the body shape of your bridesmaids. As a curvy girl, I can discuss this openly: If you have bridesmaids that are curvier than others, PLEASE consider the comfort of all the girls when selecting the dress! 🙂

DIFFERENT DRESSES, SAME COLOUR

When my girlfriend Alycia got married this past summer, all of the bridesmaids had the option to choose whatever dress they wanted, provided they all came in the same colour. Considering we bought our dresses from David’s Bridal, this was pretty easy since virtually every dress they make can come in any of their available colours. As the bridesmaids, we all really loved this option as we were able to pick dresses we felt the most comfortable in. Oddly enough, we all ended up in dresses that were the same length, but we were each able to find a dress we loved. (Mine was a one shoulder that is going to remain in my wardrobe for as long as possible – I loved it!)

I loved these dresses because of the sparkle!

MATCHING/SIMILAR DRESSES, SIMILAR COLOURS/SHADES

This look is really cute, and allows for some variety while still keeping within a colour range. You have a lot of decisions to make when it comes to this choice… Bold colours or shades? Same style or slightly different? And do you let your maids choose, or do you choose them all? While this one may come with the most choices for you as the bride, this option provides the best results for tying in multiple colours/shades while still looking cohesive.

DIFFERENT DRESSES, DIFFERENT COLOURS
This option allows your bridesmaids to choose whatever dress they’d like, regardless of colour or style. I like how this bride kept the bouquets neutral so the colour of the dresses could really pop. My recommendation if you are letting your bridesmaids choose their dresses entirely, then let them know about what colours you’re planning to use in your wedding, or what palate you’d like to see. (cool tones, brights, warm colours, feminine, etc).

Whatever you choose, make sure that both you and your bridesmaids are happy with the choice. Remember, its your wedding, but you aren’t the one in the dress for the whole day, so unless you’re footing the bill for all of the dresses, listen to what your bridesmaids say about the dresses they try on and judge their reactions. These are your friends and family… You’ll be able to know which dress they love best!

Once you’ve selected your dresses, grab some cocktails, turn on Bridesmaids, and let the laughs begin.
